Why We Have a Membership Fee – And Why It’s Worth It

Running is free. A pair of shoes, an open road, and you’re good to go. So why does Russell Run Club have a membership fee?

I struggled with this question when we first introduced it. I worried it might deter people from joining, that it would create a barrier for those who just wanted to run with a group. But as we’ve grown, I’ve come to realize something important: our club is not just a run crew, and it’s not just a casual meet-up. We are a not-for-profit organization, and that membership fee isn’t about making money—it’s about making the club better.
Safety First
One of the biggest reasons we have a membership fee is safety. As an Athletics Ontario-affiliated club, we have strict safety requirements in place to protect our members, especially our youth participants.
Anyone who volunteers with kids in our programs is required to complete a police background check. This ensures a safe and welcoming environment for young runners and gives parents peace of mind. Our group run leaders also have the opportunity to take training designed to help them guide runs safely, respond to emergencies, and ensure all participants feel supported. It’s not just about showing up and running—it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels secure and included.
We also carry insurance that protects our club and our members. This isn’t something an informal running group typically offers, but it’s important for us to have measures in place to keep everyone safe.
Building a Sustainable Club
Beyond safety, the membership fee helps cover essential costs that keep the club running. We invest in things like securing permits for training locations, organizing events, and maintaining resources like first aid kits, signage, and club communication tools (website, marketing platform, emails, etc.).

We have a certified coach leading the way. Having an NCCP-certified coach means our members receive guidance that is backed by knowledge and experience, ensuring that training plans, advice, and workouts are structured with a purpose. It’s one of the things that elevates Russell Run Club beyond just being a social gathering—we offer coaching and support to help runners reach their goals.

The Russell Run and other programs we offer also help fund club operations, making it possible for us to keep membership fees reasonable while still providing value to our members.
Our Members See the Value
Despite my initial hesitation about charging a fee, I’ve been humbled by the response. Returning members have signed up immediately when registration opens, without question. We’ve even had people join before attending their first group run, recognizing the value of being part of something bigger. It’s clear that what we’ve built is more than just a running group—it’s a community.
Try Us Out
That said, I never want cost to be a reason someone doesn’t feel welcome. If you’re unsure whether Russell Run Club is the right fit for you, join us for a group run. Just sign the waiver, show up, and take us for a test run. See if we click. If you find what so many others have—a team, a place to belong, a group of runners who will support you no matter your pace or experience—then we’d love to have you as a member.
This club exists because of the people in it. Your support helps us continue growing, evolving, and creating something special.
See you on the run.
