Happy Groundhog Day! Will we have an early spring or need to continue bundling up for our winter runs? It seems the groundhogs are not in agreement today.

UPDATE: Snowshoe Squall

With only 3 weeks to race day, the Snowshoe Squall is coming together. Here are a few updates:

  • 12 pairs of DION snowshoes and prizes have arrived.

  • The walking trails at Hammond Hill are now open and ready for us to map out the course

  • The Athletics Ontario Race Sanction Application has been approved.

  • We now have cool swag for the event.

What's next?

  • Snowshoe Running Clinic: Curious about snowshoe running? We'll be having a snowshoe running clinic/demo so you can try it out before race day.

  • This is the official call for race day volunteers. Email info@russellrunclub.ca if you're interested.

  • We need runners and walkers! No event can happen without participants. No time like the present to register the whole family.

Track workouts are back!

With our clinics in full swing, track workouts are back.

When: Thursdays at 4:30 PM (no sessions on Feb 20th, Mar 13th, April 10th, April 24th ). Early birds and shift workers, please get in touch with michelle (michelle@russellrunclub.ca).

Where: Township of Russell Sports Dome

Who: Russell Run Club members

Due to popular demand, Track Workout Thursday is here! This program follows the Introduce, Improve, Perfect principle, with each session building on the last for consistent progress. The workouts are structured and are designed to help in your training.

Coach Michelle takes pride in designing progressive, purposeful workouts—rather than random weekly workouts without clear direction. This program is open to current Russell Run Club members at no cost. That said, organizing, planning, and leading these sessions requires time and effort from her packed schedule, so she would appreciate your cooperation in helping everything run smoothly for the group.

What You Need to Know for a Successful Season

  • RSVP Required: Please RSVP if you’re attending to help me plan effectively. A minimum of 5 participants is needed to hold the session. If turnout is too low, the session will be cancelled for that week. Continued low turnout will lead to cancelling the season. RVSP on our website, please not on Facebook: https://www.russellrunclub.com/group-runs-workouts

  • Current Membership: You must be an active member of the Russell Run Club to participate in this program. (Clinic registrants, you are already members)

  • Participation Requirements: This program is designed for runners with a solid running foundation ready for speed and tempo intervals. If you do not have this, you will increase your chance of injury. You’re still welcome to join and get some base mileage alongside the group.

  • Guidance Provided: I’ll offer general tips and recommendations during the sessions. For personalized feedback and coaching, we encourage you to join one of our Running Clinics, consider one-on-one coaching or purchasing a tailored training plan.

  • Consistency is Key: To maximize your progress, regular attendance is recommended. Each workout builds on the previous one, so make it a priority to attend weekly.

First Learn/Return To Run Session

On Tuesday we kicked off the first session of our Learn/Return to Run clinic with an eager group of 12 runners. With the outdoor temperatures particularly cold this year, we are grateful for switching to the indoor Sports Dome. With the protection from the elements, we can spend more time each week focusing on sharing information, answering questions and getting to know one another.

If you want to join the clinic, it's not too late. Click the button below to get registered.

And they're off: First Session of Youth Running & Run, Jump, Throw

Holy moly, the field was packed with kids! It was fantastic to see so many new and familiar faces kicking off the Youth Running and Run Jump Throw program.

The first session was all about getting into the groove—learning names, personalities, and how we run things (literally!). We eased in with warm-ups, drills, and a fun "Getting to Know You" game. Turns out, some kids make their bed, others have been on a boat, but all were awesome!

We introduced tall starts, the role of arms in running, and played "Start Game" and "Crazy Arm" to highlight good form. Even after stretching, some kids still had energy to burn, sneaking in a final sprint!

New York Central Fitness Trail parkrun

Once again Mother Nature was the cause of another parkrun cancellation. It can't be this cold every Saturday, can it? Fingers crossed we'll have better weather for our next parkrun on February 8th, 2025.

Parkrun is a free timed 5km run, walk or jog every Saturday at 9:00 AM.  To register, go to https://www.parkrun.ca/register/. You only have to do it once. Remember to bring your barcode or take a screenshot of it on your phone.

What was the Russell Run Club Up To This Week?

Strength Training For Runners

Coach Michelle invited her Strength and Conditioning Coach, Jamie Wright, to speak with our athletes about movement, mobility, and strength—and let’s say, many eyes were opened (and a few butts poked). These ladies walked away with a practical warm-up routine to prepare them for training and help counteract the posture imbalances created by our sport and daily life. They also got a simple, effective strength routine to keep them consistently training, plus some long-overdue myth-busting on strength training.

Thanks to Tara-Lynn for hosting and to everyone who participated. This won’t be the last time—we may turn this into a regular event and keep building on what we learn!

While we all typically prefer to run in the great outdoors, Sunday's -20C temperatures had us huddled in the Sports Dome for our Sunday group run this week.
