Consistency is key—not just in training but also in growing a running club. We've embraced this philosophy at the Russell Run Club, holding regular group runs for over two years. While weather and other events occasionally lead to cancellations, showing up week after week has helped us build a thriving, welcoming running community.
From our humble beginnings on that first Sunday morning in August 2022—with just one other runner joining me—we’ve grown exponentially. Now, with two weekly group runs, we regularly welcome 5, 10, 15, and sometimes even 20 runners.
Running is often seen as a solitary activity, a time to clear your mind and challenge yourself. As a solo runner, I understand the discomfort of being around others, even fellow runners.
Yet, over the years, I’ve come to appreciate the unique benefits that keep people coming back to our group runs.
Why Join a Group Run?
1. Accountability
It’s easy to skip a run when you’re alone. Knowing others are waiting for you gives you the nudge to lace up and hit the road.
2. Motivation and Support
Running with a group can push you to go farther or faster than you might on your own.
3. Social Connection
Whether it’s chatting about training tips or enjoying a comfortable silence, running together builds camaraderie and friendships.
4. Safety in Numbers
Groups enhance safety, especially in the early mornings or in unfamiliar areas. Plus, if someone faces a challenge, there’s immediate support.
5. Learning Opportunities
From gear advice to race tips, group runs are a treasure trove of knowledge experienced runners share.
Over time, runners and walkers come and go. Injuries happen, schedules change, and life gets busy.
However, we aim to ensure no one "never returns" because they feel they don’t fit in—whether physically or socially.
To foster a supportive environment, we’ve established Group Run Guidelines. These ensure a positive experience for everyone. There are guidelines on safety and sharing the road, however, the following are the most important to ensure the growth of our club:
Welcome New Runners: Show kindness and encouragement—sometimes just showing up is the hardest part.
No One Left Behind: Use the buddy system. If someone slows down, ensure they’re not alone.
Double Back if Necessary: Loopback occasionally to keep the group together.
Help Others: Check on anyone struggling, even if they’re not in the group. A small gesture can make a big difference.
Our Group Run Leads play a crucial role in this. They arrive early, greet new runners, explain the route, and check in with participants. Their focus isn’t on the fastest runners but on ensuring everyone feels included—especially newcomers worried about being too slow.
We also have requirements for them to ensure a safe and welcoming experience. If you find you are a fit, you are more than welcome to sign up.

FAQs
Here are some commonly asked questions:
Who can join the group run?
Anyone, whether a beginner or an experienced runner, is welcome. We foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.
Do I need to be a club member?
No. Just sign our waiver before joining. If you enjoy running with us, we encourage you to become a member—it helps support the club and comes with perks.
What’s the route like?
In spring, summer, and fall, we run on the New York Central Fitness Trail (5–10 km out and back). In winter, we switch to subdivision routes, which are posted on our Events Page.
What about pace?
We accommodate all paces - even WALKING. At the pre-run meeting, we match runners with similar speeds.
Do I need to RSVP?
It's not required, but it's appreciated! Let us know on our Event Page, Facebook, Instagram, or via email.
What if it rains or snows?
We run rain or shine, but extreme weather may lead to cancellations. Check our website or social media for updates.
Can I bring my dog?
We prefer you leave pets at home, as not everyone is comfortable around dogs.
What about strollers?
Strollers are welcome! You can even bring the kiddos.
