Runner's Spotlight: Celebrating Our Club's Inspirational Members

Meet Julie

Welcome to our Runner's Spotlight, where we celebrate the dedication, achievements, and inspiring journey of one outstanding individual in the Russell Run Club. Each month, we spotlight a member who embodies the spirit of our community through their passion for running, commitment to personal growth, and contributions to the club.

You can’t miss Julie Hout-Hebert with her big smile and sunny disposition. Julie joined our club in 2023 through the 10 km clinic and continued with the 1/2 marathon clinics. She quickly became a fixture with the club - showing up for our group runs and track workouts - whenever she was not at her husband’s bodybuilding competition. Julie sets an excellent example for the club - consistently showing to train and ready to work hard. No matter how challenging the workout is, she sees its positive aspects. “I was out of my comfort zone but in a good way” or “It was a little hard but overall good” are typical comments posted after a workout. Even though she will tell you she's shy, she makes a great running partner, setting a steady pace and providing great company for those longer runs.

Now, let’s learn more about Julie and what drives her.

How long have you been running?

I have been running for over 20 years now.

Why did you start running?

I started running when my daughter was six months old to lose weight. I had just joined Weight Watchers to lose the “baby weight”.

One of the ladies mentioned that she had started running and was using the run 2 mins and walk 1 min method. I thought, “I could try that,” as I had always admired people who could run. Within six months, I was able to run for 30 minutes. I was amazed I had come so far.

What motivates you to keep running?

Over the years, what kept me running was that I didn't need a lot of equipment—just a pair of running shoes, a water belt, and music. I find I do my best thinking and problem-solving on my runs. Running helps my mental health because, as a registered nurse, I handle a lot of highly stressful situations. Running makes me more patient, and it helps clear my mind.

Any achievements you want to share?

I completed my first half marathon, the St. Lawrence Half Marathon in April of 2024. This distance was always on my bucket list but I never thought I would achieve it before I retired.

I also completed the Army Run Sargent's Challenge (15km) in 2023.

What are you training for right now?

I'm training for the Commander's Challenge at the Army Run this September. This means completing the 5 km race and returning to the start line to run the half marathon for a total of 26.1 kilometres.

What is your training routine?

I run four to five times per week of various distances. My average weekly mileage is 30 to 35 km. While my long runs are my favourite, I do speed work as well as easy runs. I also try to weight train two to three times per week.

What is your favourite running route?

My favourite route is the New York Central Fitness Trail, which starts by Euphie d’ici. It is a flat course and easy to run without getting lost or run over.

Do you have any favourite running gear?

My favourite running shoes are Asics Cumulus Nimbus, although I have tried other shoes over the past 20+ years. I started using the Nike app 10 years ago, and I still use it today. I recommend a running belt with water bottles or a hydration vest (my vest is an Osprey) and a good watch.

How about favourite quotes or mantras?

  • Don’t ever give up.

  • Every day above ground is a good day.

  • You can do hard things and be good at them.

Do you have any tips and advice?

  • Just start with short distances and a Run/Walk strategy.

  • Find a friend to run with.

  • Don’t be afraid of what other people think. If I stopped to think about it I would never be where I am now.

What are your future goals?

My future goals are to continue running for as long as my body will allow me. I hope to run a few more half-marathons and improve my time.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of the running club?

Running can be a lonely sport, especially when you are the only runner in your household. After COVID, I wanted to meet new people, improve my 10km time, and avoid injury, so I joined the club.

I run with some great people. They keep me motivated and have also inspired me to try distances that are out of my comfort zone. I was very comfortable running 10km, but this year, I ran my first half-marathon. What an experience, and all because of this great group of people and help from Michelle’s coaching.

I don’t feel lonely running anymore. I now consider these people my friends. I am so happy to have become a member of this group. The people are so welcoming. I may appear outgoing, but I am a very shy person, and they bring me out of my shell.
