Run Club's Weekly Run-Down December 15, 2024

Writer's picture: Tammy WilliamsTammy Williams

With winter in full swing, it's important to stay informed about our events and programs. This week, we’re outlining how we determine if weather or trail conditions may lead to cancelling a group run or parkrun—your safety is always our priority! We’d also love your input through a quick survey about the Prescott-Russell Challenge. Don’t forget, our festive Christmas Light Run is just around the corner, so mark your calendars! Plus, we have exciting programs to help you stay active through the holidays. Read on for all the details and updates.

Christmas Light Run is This Week

We head out Tuesday evening for our tour of the lights of Russell. There will be walking and running groups so don't let you the term "run" intimidate you. We have routes and groups for all levels.

All ages and abilities are welcome.

Reflective gear is mandatory (we do have some available to borrow).

Santa hats and ugly Christmas sweaters are more than welcome.

Tuesdays, December 17, 2024 @ 6:00 PM Russell

Russell Park & Ride

At the end of First Avenue, Russell, ON

Post-run hot chocolate will be served at a member's home on Central Park Avenue near Parkview Terrace (the location will be announced during the pre-run speech)

Input Needed: Prescott-Russell Challenge

The inaugural 74 km Prescott-Russell Relay was a tremendous success, and we couldn’t have done it without your enthusiasm and support. We learned so much from the event and are ready to take things up a notch next year. Whether you’re looking for an epic personal challenge or a team adventure, we’re excited to offer new race options: 25 km, 50 km, and 50 miles. Now, we need your input to help select the perfect date for this next big adventure on the Prescott-Russell Trail.

How Will I Know if Group Run is Cancelled or Not

Sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas when it comes to us getting our runs in. Whether it's crazy weather or poor trail/road conditions, occasionally, our running schedule has to be adjusted at the last minute. How do I know if there has been a change?

  1. When you RSVP to a group run on our website, you will automatically receive an email notification if we need to cancel the run for any reason.

  2. We post on social media whenever a run is cancelled.

  3. Check the russellrunclub.com website, where we will activate a notice whenever a run has been cancelled.

If you are a regular at parkun, see below for how to stay updated on parkrun event cancellations.

New York Central Fitness Trail parkrun

Unfortunately, the trail was a little too hazardous this week for Parkrun, but we're hoping for better conditions next week.

How do we decide when to cancel an event?

The safety of both runners and volunteers is our top priority:

  • Is the trail safe to run on? We check the trail the day before or the morning of for excessive ice or other hazards that may result in slips and falls.

  • Is it too cold? While our participants are on the move staying warm, it's challenging for our volunteers to stay warm when the "feels like" temperatures dip below -20C.

Occasionally, we must cancel due to conflicts (holidays, other local events, etc.). So far, we haven't had to cancel due to a lack of volunteers, but that is always a possibility.

How can you find out if an event is cancelled?

While we try to decide on cancellations by 5pm the night before an event, conditions can change overnight, so it is always best to check again in the morning.

Parkrun is a free timed 5km run, walk or jog every Saturday at 9:00 AM.  To register, go to https://www.parkrun.ca/register/. You only have to do it once. Remember to bring your barcode or take a screenshot of it on your phone.
